Larkhall students praised by politician

-

Three students from Larkhall have secured themselves a place in the final of a top competition.

Zoe Lazenby-carroll, Philip Kennedy and Chris Smith are finalists in the Worldskills Live competition.

More than 194 institutions took part in the competition, with the highest number of finalists from a single institution coming from New College Lanarkshire.

The finalists were chosen as top performers in their skills from national qualifiers across the country.

They will now go forward to the UK final which will be held at the NEC in Birmingham from November 21-23 in front of more than 70,000 spectators.

The final will include contests representing the nine specialist skills in the competition: Building information modelling, construction metalwork, laboratory technician, mechanical engineering: CAD, IT software solutions for business, network infrastructure technician, network systems administrator, commercial make-up and creative media make-up.

Success in Birmingham could mean representing the UK at Worldskills Shanghai in 2021, which means there is a lot to play for in the final.

Last year Ross Megahy represented the UK at the world final in Kazan, Russia.

Congratulating the finalists, Christina Mckelvie, MSP for Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse (pictured) said:“the students and staff at New College Lanarkshire should be proud of the outstanding number and calibre of those going forward to the final from its ranks.

“It goes to show just how high the quality of education offered at New College Lanarkshire is.

“I would like to congratulate the 24 finalists and wish them the very best of luck in the upcoming competitions.

“It is always a delight to see Lanarkshire being represented on the national stage.

“In particular I would like to mention three students from Larkhall in my own constituency who will be taking part.”

Zoe, Philip and Chris will be taking part in the IT software solutions for business category, using their knowledge of computer networking and cyber security.
