Police focus on problem youths in town centre

- with Inspector Billy Sloan

Recently there has been an increase of youths congregating in large groups around Hamilton town centre, in particular the bus station and Hamilton Central train station.

Some of these groups have been responsible for acts of disorder, vandalisms and assaults.

This appears to be occurring mainly, but not exclusively, on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Some of the youths involved have travelled from outwith the area, specifically to meet up with groups from Hamilton.

Over the previous two weekends, several youths have been charged with minor offences. Some have clearly been under the influence of alcohol and subsequently have been taken home by police.

There has also been one instance where a youth who formed part of one of the groups was armed with an offensive weapon, a metal baton.

This youth was subsequently arrested.

I would appeal to readers who have children of teenage years to be aware of their whereabouts and discourage them from congregating in groups within the town centre.

There have been instances where youths have placed themselves in danger either through their actions and/or the consumption of alcohol.

My team and I will be focusing on firstly keeping people safe and ensuring that the public who use these areas for legitimate purposes feel safe.

Secondly, we will be working with our partner agencies to robustly police any groups causing disorder or committing offences.

I am certain that no parent wants the police at their door informing them that their child has been injured or arrested due to their actions in these areas.

I would therefore stress the importance on the responsibility that lies with parents to discourage their children from being part of these groups.
