Yob attacked ex and her friend

- COURT REPORTER

A man who attacked his ex and her friend has been jailed for two years and three months at Hamilton Sheriff Court.

John Provan’s assault caused Lindsey Broadhurst to pass out at one point while he grabbed handfuls of hair from the other victim’s scalp.

Provan, 37, a prisoner, admitted assaulting Ms Broadhurst to her severe injury at her home in Ewart Crescent, Hamilton, on August 10.

He also admitted assaulting Anup Padam, shouting racist abuse at him and making threats.

Natalie Goldar, 30, of Fairhill Avenue, Hamilton, was also accused of the attack on Ms Broadhurst, but her not guilty plea was accepted.

Jennifer Mclaren, prosecuting, said Provan and Ms Broadhurst had been in a relationship for 13 years. They have two children.

Mr Padam was also an ex-partner of Ms Broadhurst and occasionally stayed with her.

The prosecutor said Provan and Goldar arrived in the house about 6pm and Provan immediately launched an attack on his ex.

She was shoved to the floor and Provan put his foot on her head to pin her down.

She was struck repeatedly on the head and body.

Ms Mclaren told the court:“her face was being pushed into her jacket and she couldn’t breathe.

“Mr Padam heard the commotion and came downstairs, but Provan called him a black b ****** , ran towards him and pulled handfuls of hair from his head.

“He pulled the man’s head forward and kneed him repeatedly on the face and punched him.

“Mr Padam was pulled to the floor and kicked on the face a few times.

“He was then thrown against a wall and his head went through the plasterboard.

“After this the accused grabbed Natalie Goldar and told her they had to leave.”

An ambulance was called and both victims were treated for injuries.

Ms Broadhurst had a burst lip and a lump on the side of her head while Mr Padam suffered bruising to his face.

Defence lawyer Ali Murray said Provan had arrived at the house with a school uniform and gym kit he’d bought for his daughter.

Mr Murray told the court: “Unfortunately, the parties began to argue and matters spiralled out of control. My client wishes to apologise publicly to both victims.”

Sheriff Douglas Brown said only a custodial sentence was appropriate.

The 27-month stretch was backdated as Provan has been in custody since his arrest in August.
