Hamilton pubs were celebrating this week after three of them scooped top awards at the Best Bar None Awards.

Venues from across the town gathered at a glittering event in Motherwell Concert Hall and were rewarded for going ‘over and above’ in terms of raising standards and ensuring everyone can enjoy a safe night out. The Junkyard was the big winner on the night, picking up the Best Bar None Award, as well as the Best Bar Award.

The Academical Vaults were named Best Pub and Hemingways took home the Heart of the Community Award.

The Junkyard, based in Chapel Street, were over the moon to be the big winners.

Manager Bernard O’neill said: “What a start to 2020 and a great night of celebrations for us and our wee team.

“From all of us here at

Junkyard, big thanks for all your continued love and support. We are over the moon about it, we’ve worked hard and we are very delighted.”

Hemingways, based on Keith Street, were recognised as the ‘Heart of the Community’.

Manager Rebecca Laughlin said: “We would like to take this time to thank each and every one of our customers for their continued support every day throughout the years, as without them it would be impossible for us to achieve things like this. I would also like to thank our bar staff, as without them this wouldn’t be possible either, they keep the place alive.

“We are a small team, but we did it. We are all about the community, so we are over the moon to win this.”

The Academical Vaults, based on Burnbank Road were beyond thrilled to be named Best Pub.

A spokesperson said: “Big thank you to all our hardworking staff and also our fantastic customers. We are absolutely delighted to pick this up for the second year in a row.”

Peter Fergie, Best Bar None coordinator for Lanarkshire, said: “I would like to congratulate all the winners, not just those who have won a main award, but all the 42 venues who have taken part in the scheme throughout Lanarkshire, demonstrating a real commitment to raising safety standards and ensuring everyone can enjoy a safe night out.”
