There was a mixed reaction to the news that the Philips factory site could be transformed into flats this week.

We revealed the news on the Hamilton Advertiser’s Facebook page and many took to social media to voice their opinions.

Barry Martin posted: “More tiny, overpriced, sheetrock IKEA new builds for a non-existent ‘emerging middle class’ with the street names being the only mention of the town’s manufacturing past. I’d much rather have it for commercial use. Rather depressing if you ask me.”

Nicola Palmer said: “More housing! How are the road systems going to cope because they are under serious strain at the moment? Peak time in Hamilton is a nightmare as it is!”

David Cunning posted: “Still feel the closure was very hush hush towards the end, keep this sort of thing out the headlines. Sad times considering the amount of people who were employed in the factory over the years.”

Colin Richardson said: “It should be used for a high school.”

Kat Youd said: “Not more new houses.”

Lyndsey Brown posted: “That road is going to get worse.”

Louisa Gibson wrote: “Better start building more nurseries, primary schools and high schools for all these extra houses then, our schools are already pushed to capacity!”

Sharon Jordan said: “I hope the

surrounding areas are going to grow too, ie road system, schools, doctors, shops, to ease the pressure on the existing amenities.”

Liz Fitzpatrick posted: “Knew it would be houses, my husband worked in it for 40 years, sad to see it go.”

Joe Donnelly felt: “Throwing houses up everywhere, most park space disappeared. Hillhouse used to have three pubs, all gone as well. Less houses and more facilities the place needs.”

John Wilson said: “Sad times, I worked keeping the buildings safe, from burst doors to fitting burst lights.”

Marc Hamilton argued: “Would prefer to see it developed for commercial use and bring jobs back to the area. The roads network and local services are at or near capacity already and more housing will not help.”

Lynne Gilroy posted: “Don’t think the area’s roads could cope with another new estate, we’ve all seen first hand how chaotic the traffic is already.”
