Birthday girl Eleanor is 100 years young

- KIRSTEN MCSTAY

An Uddingston war veteran was surrounded by friends and family last week as she celebrated her 100th birthday.

Eleanor Muir was delighted to receive cards, flowers and many well wishes as she reached her milestone.

As well as receiving a letter from the Queen, Eleanor also received a personal letter from First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon.

The mum-of-three has had a full and varied life – working before the war, during the conflict and then bringing up a family.

Eleanor’s first job was in 1934, aged 14, as an office girl to famous politician RB Cunninghame Graham who, among other things, was the first president of the Scottish National Party when it was founded that year.

And Eleanor was one of the first members of staff for the SNP.

She married her husband John Muir and they moved to Tannochside as John was an engineer with the Caterpillar company. They had three children, William, Lorraine and Alan and three grandchildren.

Her working life involved her being a political campaigner, pawn broker, soldier, nurse, fishmonger, shop assistant and cook – but most of all a true friend to many. When she reached her 100th birthday, Eleanor’s son Alan said she had plenty of visitors who wanted to send their best wishes on her special day.

He said: “She had around 50 visitors to wish her a happy birthday. She was on great form on the day, North Lanarkshire Provost Jean Jones and Deputy Lord Lieutenant Andrew Braidwood stopped in to wish her a happy birthday, which she really enjoyed.”
