the lads did out there, even when we went 2-0 up the hunger was there to get more goals.”

By the time Winter made his intervention Hamilton had effectively wrapped the game up, firing in three goals before the interval.

Hamilton started well and created their first real chance in 10 minutes when Alex Gogic played a long ball out of defence that released Mickel Miller on the right and he darted through on goal, but his low shot was well blocked by City keeper Alan Martin.

Three minutes later Miller’s cross was headed towards the roof of the net by Andy Dales and beat Martin, but crashed off the crossbar.

Accies went close again in 15 minutes when a Miller cross was headed just wide by George Oakley.

That pressure paid off in 22 minutes when Aaron Mcgowan’s cross from the right was headed in at the near post by Dales for a debut goal, following his loan move from Scunthorpe United.

Hamilton doubled their lead in 25 minutes when Scott Mcmann went on a run from the right and smashed a low shot into the corner for his second goal of the season.

Accies wrapped up the win in 44 minutes when Will Collar set up Scott Martin and his drive took a deflection off defender Conrad Balatoni and wrong-footed Martin, landing in the bottom right corner.

Winter replaced Dales in 60 minutes and had a couple of chances before netting in 80 minutes, cutting in from the right past a defender and curling a shot into the bottom left corner.

Hamilton put a bit of sheen on the result in 84 minutes when Johnny Hunt played a short corner on the right to Blair Alston, and his cross was headed into the near post corner by Miller for his fourth goal of the season.

Rangers in the next round is likely to be a different story.
