Major roadworks set for busy Strathaven stretch

Warning for drivers

-

Major road improvement works in Strathaven will start next week.

The work will start from Saturday, February 8, and last until midnight on Wednesday, February 12, on the A71 Kirk Street, between Sainsbury’s entrance and the mini roundabout at Castle Street/ Stonehouse Road.

It is part of South Lanarkshire Council’s roads investment programme and has been planned to take advantage of reduced traffic flows during the February mid-term school break.

For safety reasons, the A71 will be completely closed, which means there will be no through traffic allowed on this section of road. A signed diversion route will be in place via Hamilton.

This work will be carried out in two phases:

■ Phase 1, Stonehouse Road/ Castle Street to Station Road;

■ Phase 2 Station Road to Sainsbury’s entrance. Access to and from Station Road will be maintained at all times from one direction. This will be clearly signed.

Chair of the Community and Enterprise Resources Committee, Councillor John Anderson, said: “These works are essential to improve the road surfaces on a longer-term basis and unfortunately can’t be carried out without some inconvenience to road users.

“We would ask that anyone travelling in any of the areas during the times mentioned pays particular attention to the diversion routes which will be clearly signposted. “

And he added: “Every effort will be made to complete these improvements as early as possible to allow the roads to be reopened to traffic.”
