A group of volunteers safely delivered more than 4000 chocolate eggs to every child in Bothwell and Uddingston on Easter Sunday.

The village and neighbouring town came alive amidst the doom and gloom of Covid-19 when a convoy of cars, motorcycles, vans and trucks pulled up in every street to the delight of thousands of children.

Volunteers, all strictly adhering to social distancing guidelines and wearing PPE, remained in their cars with one or two people in each street dropping an egg for every child in each household safely on their front lawns.

Children then delighted in running out to gather their goodies and wave and thank the convoy as they left.

The idea was the brainchild of the Bothwell and Uddingston Community Forum Facebook page admins, in particular Allan Stewart who helped safely organise the event.

And Allan was astounded by the level of support received as well as the messages of thanks from the local community. He said: “What an absolutely amazing response we had delivering the eggs to the children of Bothwell and Uddingston.

“A huge thank you to each and every one of our volunteers who gave up their weekend to help us make this a reality.

“A huge thank you also to everyone who donated Easter goodies, or cash and to all the businesses who helped and supported us as well – you know who you are. We have decided that this was far too good to leave it here in 2020 and we are delighted to announce that this will be an annual event for the children. It’s an event we couldn’t make possible without our volunteers, volunteers who adhered to all the guidelines set in place and made sure every child got an egg. Thank you again.”

Allan set up the Bothwell and Uddingston Community Action Group when the coronavirus crisis kicked off and they have spent the last three weeks of lockdown supporting those in the local community by delivering food and groceries to those in need, collecting prescriptions, posting mail, making phone calls to help beat loneliness and more. Anyone in Bothwell or Uddingston who is self isolating and unable to get out should please contact the Community Action Group by calling 07549 633474 with your request for help or visit the Bothwell and Uddingston Community Forum Facebook page.
