Beth is back with a bang
A gymnastics legend has sent a message of support to Hamilton’s biggest gym club during the Covid-19 outbreak.
Three-time Olympian and world champion gymnast Beth Tweddle – who opened Hamilton Gymnastics Club’s facility at Eddlewood almost seven years ago – was keen to check in on them during the pandemic.
The London 2012 bronze medallist, who has now retired from the sport, said in her video message:“i can’t believe it’s been seven years since I opened your gym club. I just wanted to send you a quick message from myself and all the team at Beth Tweddle Gymnastics.
“We know it is a really strange time right now, as it is for everyone, but we just wanted to say keep safe, keep active and you will be back doing gymnastics soon.”
In October 2013, Beth, then aged 28, was given a tour of the Hamilton facility and enjoyed a display performed by some of the club’s competition team and acro-squad students.
She was only too happy to oblige with a question and answer session with the members.
Beth, who was impressed by the new facility and the display from the club, spoke at the time and said:“i have to thank the club for inviting me here and it has been such an honour. I wish them every luck with their new amazing facility.
“After announcing my retirement, my passion is now to inspire the next generation and visiting facilities like this one helps me do exactly that.
“What the coaches have done here is amazing and they can now provide a facility for more than 600 members.
“The display I watched was great and to find out the girls only started to put it together a few days before my visit is brilliant.”
Beth, who started gymnastics at the age of seven, announced her retirement on the anniversary of her bronze medal win at the London 2012 Olympics.
Wendy Lucas, head coach at the club, said:“we have been doing loads of online things on Facebook and Instagram to keep our gymnasts fit and engaged.
“These include coaches’ challenges, gymnast tasks, competitions, word searches. It’s challenging times but we’re keeping going.”
