Trio come to the fore
Student midwives step up to help on wards during pandemic
Final year nursing and medical students have been welcomed by NHS Lanarkshire to help in the fight against Covid-19.
Among the group are three Lanarkshire student midwives from the University of the West of Scotland Hamilton campus.
They are Hamilton’s Paige Jones, Melissa Scott from Motherwell and Karen Stirling, of Law in Carluke, who have joined the maternity team at University Hospital Wishaw.
They will be working clinically until the end of August while also completing theoretical components of their degree. They will then qualify as midwives in September.
Also from the University of the West of Scotland is a group of year three nurses who have joined the emergency care area at University Hospital Wishaw.
And 27 foundation year 1 doctors from universities across Scotland and England have joined the county health board and will be working in non-covid areas including medicine, surgery and care of the elderly. They’ve been through an intensive two-day induction and are now out on the wards.
The medical students join NHS Lanarkshire from University of Glasgow, The University of Edinburgh, University of Dundee and The University of Manchester. Of the students, 18 of them will be joining NHS Lanarkshire in August as part of the normal intake and the others have kindly volunteered their time in an area close to their homes.
Dr Ian Hunter, director of medical education, said: “We would like to welcome everyone who has joined NHS Lanarkshire to assist during the current situation. We have been truly humbled by their determination and willingness to contribute to the care we provide.”
