More coronavirus deaths were recorded in South Lanarkshire than anywhere else in Scotland last week.

Figures released by the National Records of Scotland last Wednesday (June 10), revealed the number of coronavirus deaths in the region rose for the first time in six weeks.

There were 13 coronavirus deaths recorded in South Lanarkshire, a rise of 62.5 per cent from the previous week and five higher than anywhere else in Scotland.

Of those, seven occurred in care homes and six in the region’s hospitals.

That brought the total number of coronavirus deaths in South Lanarkshire to 295, of which 134 were in care homes; 131 were in hospital and 30 were in other settings, including at home.

Edinburgh saw the second-highest number of coronavirus deaths last week at eight, while there were six in Angus, East Dunbartonshire and the Scottish Borders.

North Lanarkshire saw just five coronavirus deaths last week – the lowest there since week ending March 29.

In total, there have been 257 deaths where coronavirus was listed on the death certificate in North Lanarkshire.

Of those, 91 were in care homes, 145 in hospital and 21 were in other settings including at home.

That took the total number of coronavirus deaths in Lanarkshire to 552 as of Sunday, June 7.

Lanarkshire as a whole remained the second-worst affected health board in Scotland with 8.3 deaths for every 10,000 people – only Greater Glasgow and Clyde has seen a higher death rate (10.8).

Only Lothian (688) and Greater Glasgow and Clyde (1,283) have seen a higher number of coronavirus deaths than Lanarkshire, although the death rate in Lothian is only 7.6 because of the bigger population.

Last week was also the first time since March that less than 100 deaths were recorded across Scotland.

In total, there were 89 across the country bringing the total to 4000.

More than three-quarters (76 per cent) were aged 75 or over, while 47 per cent of deaths occurred in care homes.

The figures released by the National Records of Scotland include all deaths up to Sunday, June 7.
