LOVE IS IN THE AIR

Romantic proposal by airplane banner

- MATT BRYAN

A couple are celebrating their engagement after a romantic proposal in Chatelherault Country Park was helped by an airplane banner.

Ashleigh Mcclure got the “shock of her life” when new fiancé Nicky Hutton’s marriage proposal emerged from the clouds while the couple basked in the sunshine with son Tommy at the local beauty spot.

Locals cheered in joy as Ashleigh said ‘yes’ to the overhead banner which read “Ashleigh Mcclure will you marry me?”

“I was not expecting it at all”, Ashleigh said, thinking they were meeting friends. “I actually still thought he was kidding on, and I sat with my hands on my face crying in shock, got up and everyone was cheering.

“I had no clue and he said that was the only way he could do it without me clicking on.”

An Uddingston couple are on cloud nine celebrating their engagement after an airplane with a marriage proposal flew over them in Chatelherault Country Park.

Nicky Hutton was determined to make his popping of the question a complete surprise and new fiance Ashleigh Mcclure agreed it couldn’t have gone any better.

The happy couple, both 29, were out enjoying the sunshine with two-yearold son Tommy on Monday (July 6) when Ashleigh got “the biggest shock of her life”.

An airplane flew overhead with a banner reading: “Ashleigh Mcclure will you marry me?”

A delighted Ashleigh said ‘yes’ and got a roaring reception from people who seen it all take place.

“I actually thought I was just going a walk”, Ashleigh told the Advertiser.

“I was not expecting it at all. I thought the plan was we were meeting our friends and I was sitting down on the steps waiting for them thinking they were running late.

“Then Nicky said ‘look behind you’ and I heard a noise and it was the plane flying by asking ‘will you marry me’ and I turned round and he was on one knee.

“I actually still thought he was kidding on, and I sat with my hands on my face crying in shock, got up and everyone was cheering. I hadn’t realised all my friends were there as well, that was a nice surprise.”

The banner on the plane, which flew from Blackpool, was seen by many excited locals in Hamilton, including some of Ashleigh’s friends who couldn’t wait to find out her answer.

She added: “While we were in the park, people were messaging me saying they had seen my name on the banner and asking did I say yes.

“We’ve been together nearly eight years, so I’ve been waiting for it for a long time.

“I didn’t have my glasses on at first and my eyesight is terrible so I couldn’t read it, but once it came round and I saw it I was completely in shock.

“I always thought he would never get it past me and I would know if he was going to do it. Obviously I had no clue and he said that was the only way he could do it without me clicking on.

“He did it on a random day, I finished working at 2pm and he took a half day so I just thought we were going a walk but he said if he planned something or he had taken me away somewhere I would have known.”

The couple are now looking at planning their wedding once lockdown has settled and say the local beauty spot could be a possible location.

“I actually love Chatelherault, that’s why he done it there”, Ashleigh continued. “We took our wee boy there when he was only a few months old and I fell in love with the place and I always said I had loved it there.”

There is a team of wedding planners located at Chatelherault Park who got wind the proposal was taking place this week and were quick to congratulate Ashleigh and Nicky and pass on their leaflets should they choose the location for the wedding.

Ashleigh added: “It was all very last minute as the pilot needed to know weather for flying and opening an air field.

“We’re going to start properly planning after lockdown as there’s not much we can do right now.

“I’m glad he done it the way he done it because it was a complete surprise. We had our friends round afterwards to celebrate so it was a great day.”
