Online gig raises over £1000 for youth project

- MATT BRYAN

A Blantyre band turned their cancelled ‘Sunday Sesh 3’ gig into an online fundraising drive by streaming live from their homes.

Tyre Walk ‘n’ Rollers were booked to play at The Hoolet’s in Blantyre, but instead hosted the virtual show from the band’s Facebook page and raised an amazing £1200 for Terminal One – a youth centre project in the area.

The charity sets up lots of different activities for young people in the area, providing a range of opportunities.

And the five-piece act – made up of pals John Tierney, Alan Mcdonald, Kenny Mcinally, Joe Gallacher, of Toy Tin Soldier and actor Scott Fletcher of River City fame – have proved a roaring success in the past, making this the third time they’ve raised money for Terminal One.

Alan, who plays guitar and vocals, said: “The band were originally booked to perform in The Hoolet’s Blantyre for Sunday Sesh 3. Mick Flynn at the Hoolet’s has been kind enough to host us at his premises for the previous events.

“On Saturday night, we were discussing how we were all at a bit of a loose end on Sunday due to the fundraiser being cancelled and soon after decided that we would live stream a performance from the band’s Facebook page.

“Sunday Sesh 3, which ended up being live streamed due to the ongoing lockdown, raised £1200.

“We can’t stress enough that the success of the event is down to the individuals that tuned in, interacted and donated to the cause.

“Considering that this is a time when some people have seen their incomes reduced and still donated shows what type of community we’re privileged to be a part of.

“Additionally, it shows the high regard that our community has for the services provided by Terminal One Youth Centre.

“We are all looking forward to a time when we will be able to organise a real event where we can all be in the same room. We have a feeling Sunday Sesh 4 will be something special!”

Managed by the Blantyre Youth Development Team, charity Terminal One has a committed and hard-working management committee made up of some the young people from the surrounding area.

With a diverse range of activities, the project provides a first class-opportunity for young people to develop themselves through a host of avenues.

Joanne Tierney, project coordinator from Terminal One Youth Centre, said: “All the staff, volunteers and young people would like to thank the Tyre Walk ‘n’ Rollers and the local community for their amazing efforts.

“We are totally overwhelmed by the response.

“The young people of Blantyre, Burnbank and Hillhouse will benefit greatly from this donation.

“It will enable us to immediately provide food and activity packs for the young people and their families. With this donation, the young people will also have the opportunity to attend outings and a respite residential week.

“This contribution will go a long way in providing our young people with immediate support required and something to look forward to in the future.”
