Munro wants to become a first-team star

- ANDY MCGILVRAY

Kyle Munro admits this is the biggest season of his life as he tries to become a first-team regular at Hamilton Accies.

The 18-year-old winger has been elevated to Brian Rice’s firstteam squad as a consequence of squad cut-backs following the coronavirus outbreak.

But he wants to follow in the footsteps of former stars James Mccarthy and James Mcarthur and make a name for himself.

Munro said: “It’s a massive opportunity for me, probably the biggest season of my career.

“It’s the beginning of my career, and I need to kick-start it, basically.

“The coronavirus has really helped me, pushing me on into the first team.

“I’m trying to make my debut this season and show Brian Rice and [Academy head] George Cairns what I’ve got.

“The club seem to have high hopes for me, and that puts a bit of pressure on me, but I just need to overcome it and prove that I’m worthy of keeping myself in the team.”

Munro added: “The club has been great for players like James Mccarthy and James Mcarthur, and hopefully one day I might go into the Premier

League like those two.

“Hopefully that might happen to me, I just need to push myself and prove that I’m worthy of it.”

Another of those players who have played at a high level is current captain Brian Easton, who starred for Burnley before returning north with St Johnstone.

Munro says he will be a big influence, but there are others who can offer helpful advice.

He said: “I played reserves last season with Brian when he was injured and playing next to him was really good.

“His communication was great, he helped me through the game, and it was very good, he’s a good vocal point.

“There are a lot of players who have been where I was, who have come through the youth at Hamilton.

“They will all help me through it, so it’s a good environment to be in.”

Munro is keen to be involved in the season opener at Celtic Park, but knows there is hard work ahead of him.

“I need to prove myself in the pre-season games, and hopefully I get put in the squad,” he said.

“I want to play as many games as possible, try to get myself into the team and keep myself there, and keep a consistency throughout the season.”
