You have to hand it to Tunnock’s Giant sanitiser is in shape of Caramel Wafer

- MATT BRYAN

Washing your hands has just gotten more fun as Tunnock’s show off their new hand sanitiser built as a giant Caramel Wafer.

It’s just one of many quirky stations provided by local family business Mannering Industrial, who are encouraging more people to wash their hands with their new idea.

The firm, run by a Bothwell family, has been designing branded wash stations to companies – including the nation’s favourite bakery based in Uddingston.

And Tunnock’s are delighted with their new addition to the workplace.

Operations director Fergus Louden said: “Our business has always had a wash hands policy. Like everyone else at the moment, we are using a lot more hand sanitiser and have sanitisation stations all over the factory.

“When our supplier approached us with the concept we thought it was a novel idea to promote hand sanitising, and of course the brand. The caramel wafer unit certainly has caused a bit of a stir in the office where it is located.”

The idea comes as firms reopen for business after lockdown and new Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and other safety measures become part of the furniture.

The hand sanitisers are hands-free and are operated by a foot pedal in order to completely minimise risk of contamination on surfaces.

They are the brainchild of business owner Richard Mannering. He said: “It all began when we started producing hand sanitiser stations and I saw a five-litre container and thought we could design something around this that is high volume and people don’t need to refill it as often and make it look quite good.

“The key thing was putting customers’ branding on them. The Tunnock’s one we were really keen to do.

“It’s a brand known all over the world, so when we got that we were able to kickstart from there. We showed Tunnock’s our initial plans for them, showed them a visual design of the caramel wafer and they said ‘magic, we’ll have one of them!’ It was great to do one that everyone recognises.”

The branded sanitisers have proved popular, with similar designs being made for Rocca Hamilton, David Corbett Hairdressing and local bridal shop Bijoux Bridal.

Mannering Industrial has been in business for 33 years. Richard and his brother Michael took the reins of the family business from their parents last year, and despite difficult times, the business has been able to thrive during the coronavirus crisis due to the demand of PPE.

Richard hopes to encourage youths to wash their hands more with his fun method with plans to make more stations that are child-friendly and suitable for schools.

He added: “We’re keen to do a smaller one for kids that can go in schools or clubs.

“People need to wash their hands more so we want to make it a bit more fun and eye-catching. If the branding is right and put in the right place then they should encourage more people, as opposed to bottles on tables where there’s lots of surfaces which you see a lot.”
