Care home creates a mural of shops

- STAFF REPORTER

A Hamilton care home used an art project to give residents a taste of the outside world.

With lockdown still in place, staff at Avonbridge helped create a brightlycoloured mural of a high street.

Residents were asked what they would like to feature on the walls, to create a feeling of walking along a busy row of shops.

The mural put together by staff showcases a post office, hairdressers, café and grocery store as well as nature scenes like cherry blossom trees.

And the art has sparked some lively discussion in the home; residents have been discussing which businesses along their local high street they’re most looking forward to visiting when restrictions allow.

Moira Buchanan, 83, a resident at the care home, said: “These murals are just gorgeous. I love all the bright colours that are in them, it makes you feel like you have everything we are used to seeing back on our doorsteps again.”

Michelle Ruiz-beltran, home manager at Avonbridge, said: “The mural looks fantastic and everyone has worked so hard to piece it together.

“Unfortunately, lockdown has meant that we can’t take our residents out to the shops or cafes like we usually would, so this is a great alternative for the time being. It is important to us that our residents feel connected to the local community, especially at such a difficult time.

“Reminding them about comforts, such as visiting the local shops, helps them to still feel that connection while remaining inside.”
