SMITH READY FOR CHANCE

Striker aims to make his first-team impact

- MARK PIRIE

Hamilton Accies forward Callum Smith reckons the steep learning curve against Motherwell and Rangers has prepared him for first-team success.

The attacker is hoping to work his way into Brian Rice’s starting line-up this weekend as Accies return to Scottish Premiership action against Livingston.

The 20- year- old, who was playing for Airdrieonians in League One last term, is raring to go if handed a start at The Tony Macaroni Arena after his earlyseason experiences.

He said: “League One to the

Premiership has been a big jump, but I feel I have handled it well so far.

“I’ve not had lots of game time, but I can see the jump.

“I’m loving it though and it’s something I’ve always wanted to do.

“I’m taking as it comes just now, but I’ve had good experience so far.

“I played against Motherwell and Rangers and to get that first win over Motherwell was just brilliant. I’ll always remember that game, and it was topped off by getting the result against the local rivals.

“Coming on against Rangers as well; that’s something I’ve always wanted to do is play Rangers.

“It’s all came really quickly but I think the learning curve will really benefit me.

“The higher quality of player you are playing against, you’re always going to get better.

“Now I’m just training hard and just waiting for my chance to come.

“I feel when I do get that chance again I’ll be ready because of the experience I’ve had so far.

“If I get the chance again I’ll definitely take it. I’m more of a pacy kind of guy who likes to take players on, so hopefully I can give a different option when I come on or start.”

Smith says the players have been training hard throughout the international break as they bid to climb away from the foot of the table

“Brian wants us working hard and we want to meet that level even when there is a free weekend,” added the striker.

“It’s strange circumstances. After four months off you are just buzzing to be back, and to have a break again isn’t great.

He went on: “It’s been a tough start to the season for us and I think we have been unlucky in a few of the games as well.

“We’re all really looking forward to Livingston, even though we know they will be a hard team to play against.”
