CHARITY MATCH RAISES £50,000

Old Firm legends turn out for teen

- LEONA GREENAN

Hamilton Accies led the way by live-streaming a charity football match from the Foy’s Stadium on Saturday.

The Scottish Premiership side offered pay-per-view to anyone wishing to tune in and support the game, which was held to raise funds for a Glasgow teen with an incurable brain cancer.

Daniel Caplan suffers from DMG (Diffuse Midline Glioma), and friends and family rallied round to support the 17-yearold by taking part in the ‘Doing it for Daniel’ football game, before enjoying a socially- distanced evening with former Old Firm stars Frank Mcavennie and Willie Henderson.

Mcavennie managed one of the teams on the day, which included boxing promoter Barry Hughes who, along with Stormsportsx, kindly donated dozens of memorabilia items on the day for auction and paid for the event catering.

The money raised from the event at Accies – which is so far more than £ 50,000 – is being donated to charity Funding Neuro.

Funding Neuro hope to begin trials on treatments with 18 children, including Daniel, who have been diagnosed with DMG later this year.

Prior to the charity match, a Justgiving fund had already raised more than £95,000 of the £250,000 that is needed to help fund the trials.

Hamilton Accies chief executive Colin Mcgowan was happy to host the game at the club.

He told the Advertiser: “How could we not get involved and support such a cause?

“Daniel and his family are absolutely fantastic people and his diagnosis of such a rare, aggressive form of cancer is truly devastating.

“The level of support shown for them all across the board has been phenomenal and we were happy to be able to help by hosting the pay-per-view charity match in aid of Funding Neuro.

“A huge thank you to Frank Mcavennie, Willie Henderson and Des Clark, who put on a great question and answer session, following the charity match.

“No one took a penny for their time, and in fact all three donated to the cause. Thank you also to Barry Hughes and Stormsportsx for their donations and to everyone else who took part on the day. Everyone involved should be applauded.”

Last week, Daniel hit the headlines after receiving messages of support from boxing champ Tyson Fury, Arsenal star and former Celtic champ Kieran Teirney, Celtic manager Neil Lennon and his team and Rangers’ Steven Gerrard.
