Hamilton OAP spreads early Christmas cheer for kids

- MATT BRYAN

A Hamilton pensioner is switching his Christmas lights on early – to help bring some joy back to people’s lives.

Ian Cochran has been lighting up the neighbourhood for over 30 years with elaborate festive decor at his home in Burnblea Street.

And he is determined not to let Covid-19 dampen the spirits of the youth.

The 68- year- old admits the global pandemic could negatively affect people’s this year, however he is willing to do his bit to help.

December 1 is when the lights are traditionally switched on, but this year Ian is starting the festivities early as they may be needed more than usual. They will be switched on for the first time on October 2, then every weekend until December 1, where they will stay on all through the month.

Ian said: “I’m trying to bring some cheer back into people and children’s lives for how they’ve been affected this year with their mental health. Christmas always brings joy to people, and the display is especially important this year when many people won’t be able to spend the holidays with loved ones.”

Ian’s lights are always gladly welcomed by residents in the area who always comment on his glowing house. And he’s already made a start to the decorations – making it a 35th consecutive year of his annual tradition.

“I’m 68 and it’s getting a bit much now to do all the heights myself”, Ian continued. “It’s always put up at the front of the house and indoors. It has cost me thousands in the past 35 years and I do it all myself. This is my second week I’m in now. When I start, I don’t know when to stop. I just keep putting more up.”

With huge uncertainty looming over restrictions during the Christmas period, Ian is making sure he can spread some cheer. It is yet unknown what limits will be in place for locals seeing loved ones in December, but the popular display will be sure to put smiles on children’s faces.

Ian is encouraging locals to take a drive up to Burnblea Street to have a look and if you’re in need of a smile. You can show your appreciation by giving Ian a toot of the horn.

The Advertiser featured Ian’s magical display around 20 years ago in the paper, and we’re glad to see he’s still spreading the Christmas cheer.
