Clean-up crew will be out each weekend

Volunteers will be in Eddlewood every Sunday at noon

A new community action group marked their launch with a clean- up of the Eddlewood area in Hamilton on Sunday, September 13.

Councillor Josh Wilson was among the volunteers collecting litter in the streets and woods to help improve the area’s image.

The Eddlewood Community Action Group will continue to promote their services by distributing leaflets when they meet again this weekend.

The clean-up of the area will take place every Sunday at noon, where volunteers can meet outside Eddlewood Football Club’s pavilion and get involved.

The action group is organised by Karen Madden who is calling on more local residents to get involved.

Councillor Wilson said: “It was great to join Karen and her team on Sunday and I’m looking forward to working with them in the future.

“Eddlewood is a great area with many community-minded people living within it. If we all work together, we can bring transformational change to the community.

“We are meeting again on Sunday at 12 to deliver some leaflets promoting the action group’s work. If you would like to join us, please come along.”

South Lanarkshire Council Leader, and Hamilton Councillor, John Ross added: “At the council, we are working hard to empower people to take decisions about the areas in which they live.

“During lockdown community engagement went through the roof and it’s important that we capitalise on that.

“I will be doing everything I can to support the group and I would urge everyone to get involved and help make a difference.”

Karen said: “Eddlewood is a great place to live and has some fantastic community minded people within it.

“It is so important that we use that momentum to improve our community for the better.

“That is why I have organised a weekly community clean up and established the action group.

“Whilst support from the community has been welcome, we need more people on board if we are to make a difference. So, if you would like to come along, please join us this Sunday at 12pm outside Eddlewood Football Club.”

The volunteers have already carried out several community clean-ups over the past month and are looking to expand their reach.

The group are supported by Councillor Josh Wilson and the Community Participation team at South Lanarkshire Council.
