Dalziel coach relishes challenge
Dalziel Rugby Club coach Graham Calder says he’s looking forward to testing his side against higher-league opposition when thewest Competition 1 kicks off next month.
But he would rather be playing competitive rugby to prove that they should have wonwest League 2 last season.
The Motherwell side were behind Strathaven in the pecking order, but winning all of their games in hand would have seen them promoted.
However, Calder is just pleased to have fixtures to look forward to, starting with a derby at home to Uddingston a week later on November 7.
With Helensburgh, Lenzie and Waysiders/drumpellier also in that first group, Calder is eager to get started.
He said:“there’s no doubt about it, in an ideal world I would rather be playing in a competitive league, to try and win the league and gain promotion, but I understand that’s not possible, so with that in mind we’re just delighted that we’re getting competitive rugby.
“It will be interesting; we had two good games against Uddingston last season so I’m looking forward to it.
“We’re happy with our group, particularly with Lenzie, who are a league above us, so that will be a good indication as to where we are in terms of our development.
“In the second half of the season we will also play Allan Glen’s who did exceptionally well in the last few years, and they only narrowly beat us at Dalziel Park two seasons ago.those will be good tests, and we feel as a team that we’re better than the league we were in.”
