Guide dog Milo is a record breaker

- LEONA GREENAN

Blind Larkhall charity champion Scott Cunningham MBE has every reason to celebrate his Kiltwalk success.

For Scott was delighted to learn that his trusted canine companion Milo has become a record holder by successfully completing his fifth 26-mile Mighty Stride.

Milo, who is now 10 and in his retirement year, is the only guide dog in the country to take part in the event five years running and collected his very own medal for doing so – all in aid of Guide Dogs UK.

Scott explained: “I’m now in my 25th year as a guide dog owner and it is a year I would like to celebrate by giving back to the charity which has given me three incredible canine mobility aids, and my life back, after sight loss back in 1993.

“Due to the pandemic some of my plans have been put on hold for the time being but this year’s Virtual Kiltwalk was the perfect option.

“It is the ideal event for us to not only raise essential funds for this amazing charity, but also to heighten the awareness of the services they deliver to blind people throughout the UK.”

With coronavirus putting a hold on the actual Edinburgh Kiltwalk, participants were encouraged to create their own event, and Scott, Milo and their team of friends chose to walk the Mighty Stride along the Clyde Walkway on September 12.

Scott added; “Team Milo’s Miles for the event with myself and Milo were Janice Imray, Jim Jack, Jordon Dykes and Elizabeth Lumsden, who all helped make it a very successful day, completing the route in style!

“I am very proud of everyone’s effort along the sometimes testing and tough route and really humbled by the donations that everyone received.

“Thanks to Tom Hunter’s announcement that he is doubling the money gathered from Kiltwalk participants we are delighted to announce that we have raised well over £4000.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has so far very kindly sponsored Team Milo’s Miles, it is so much appreciated.”
