Zooming back into action at speakers club

- STAFF REPORTER

Hamilton Speakers Club gathered lastthursday, October 15, for their first meeting of the year.

Things were a little bit different from before however, because of the pandemic.

Instead of meeting at the usual location of Ferniegair Hall, the members went online.

A club spokesperson said:“as with all the other Scottish clubs, the effects of the coronavirus have had a big effect on our planning, but president Lynnette Jardine welcomed the members to the new style of meeting, which will be with us for the foreseeable future.

“Since we cannot meet in anything like the usual format, the club had agreed to try out a virtual conversation using Zoom.

“The format for the next few weeks was agreed to consist of one topic for each member, to be answered in three to four minutes, with the answer being evaluated by the person who set it.

“This would take place every two weeks.”

There was the usual eclectic mix on the evening from the members who joined the Zoom call.

Sylvia Davidson started by liking spring, saying it was the start of things fresh and new.

Rita Little looked back on lockdown as a form of imprisonment, with her house being uncannily silent from a lack of visitors.

John Jardine had enjoyed walking the dog during lockdown.

John di Mambro bemoaned the advice given for personal health.

Henry Mccoll was challenged to give positive changes arising from the coronavirus seclusion, and he had found it to bring many benefits.

And Jim Ralton outlined his thoughts on the flu injections being given in the midst of the coronavinus epidemic.

Hamilton Speakers Club is the oldest organisation of its kind that meets in Lanarkshire and lets people gather and speak in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.
