Sloppy Accies ship nine goals in a week

- ANDY MCGILVRAY

Hamilton fell to another heavy Premiership defeat on Tuesday night as Aberdeen ran riot under the floodlights at Pittodrie.

The 4- 2 defeat came hot on the heels of a 5-3 thrashing at home to St Johnstone on Saturday and it leaves Accies bottom of the Premiership, having played a game more than nearest rivals St Mirren, who they face this weekend.

On Tuesday, the Dons were 4-1 up and cruising at the interval through a

Ryan Edmondson double and strikes from Tommie Hoban and Lewis Ferguson.

Hamilton pulled one back through David Moyo’s first goal of the season, and were unlucky not to score again through Ross Callachan before halftime.

They came roaring back in the second half and had a couple of half-chances before Callachan netted from the spot, after Andy Considine had handled a Lee Hodson cross.

However, the damage had been done in that first half, with Aberdeen scoring four times in a devastating 18-minute spell.

On Saturday Accies also gave their opponents a big head start. Calum Davidson’s St Johnstone side were 3-0 up and seemingly cruising through a Stevie May brace and a David Wothorspoon strike.

A Ronan Hughes double and Marios Ogkmpoe strike for Accies gave Saints a nervy few moments before Craig Conway settled the contest with a 69thminute goal, then added a late fifth.

It has been a nightmare few days for Hamilton boss Brian Rice and after the defeat in the Granite City – Accies’ eighth in 11 league games – he said: “It was a 20 minute spell where we lost the game. We started the game okay, first 15 minutes, and then the next 20 minutes I don’t know what happened.

“We gave ourselves an absolute mountain to climb.

“No disrespect to Aberdeen, they scored a couple of really good goals, but I think a couple of them were really avoidable and really sloppy from us.

“We started to climb that mountain and, I must say, second half was the best we’ve played all season by a long way.

“But you can’t come here and be 4-0 down and expect to take something out the game.”
