Hamilton still a Covid hotspot

Town has almost half of all positive cases recorded across the region last week

More than 1200 people in South Lanarkshir­e tested positive for coronaviru­s last week.

Hamilton remains the region’s Covid hotspot with

516 (41 per cent) of the 1245 cases recorded last week.

The figures, published by Public Health Scotland, represent new weekly records for the region as cases continue to increase.

East Kilbride and Avondale saw 302 new cases last week, while 288 were recorded in Rutherglen and Cambuslang and 139 in Clydesdale.

All but one neighbourh­ood in South Lanarkshir­e saw more than one case for every 1000 residents last week – with some areas recording almost 10 times as many.

The wider Hamilton area saw the highest rate of new cases at 5.11 per 1000 residents.

Rutherglen and Cambuslang recorded 4.57 cases for every 1000 residents.

The rate in East Kilbride and Avondale (3.15) and Clydesdale (2.29) was lower, but still more than double that required to be in the red zone on the Public Health Scotland Covid-19 Daily Dashboard.

South Lanarkshir­e as a whole had a seven-day positive rate of 3.88 per 1000 residents.

Merryton and Meadowhill recorded the most new cases in the Hamilton area at 30 – equivalent to 9.51 per 1,000 residents.

Crosshouse and Lindsayfie­ld (33) and Nerston and EK Landward area (39) in East Kilbride and Avondale as well as Halfway, Hallside and Drumsagard (34),Vicarland and Cairns (32),Westburn and Newton (37) andwhitlaw­burn and Greenlees (30) in Rutherglen and Cambuslang all recorded at least 30 cases last week.
