Vics left frustrated as break follows victory

- ANDY MCGILVRAY

Blantyre Vics boss John Gibson was delighted with his side’s 2-1 West Of Scotland League win over Kilwinning Rangers in ‘difficult’ conditions.

But he’s frustrated at having to sit it out this weekend in the 15-team Premier Division, because is halts the momentum after taking four points from their opening two games.

Gibson admitted the weather actually played its part in the win at The Buffs as the wind caught Dale Jones’ effort and took it over the keeper, with Michael

Archer adding a second.

Gibson said: “It was a good performance and a good win in difficult conditions.

“We’ve done well to get the three points against a very good Kilwinning side who were up there at the top last season.

“It was difficult with the conditions but we got the three points and we’re delighted with them.

“Dale’s goal was wind-assisted, a gust of wind took it and it bounced over the keeper’s head.

“It was hard conditions for both teams and I think it was a horrible weekend for everybody, but it was good to get the win again and that’s four points out of six, so we’re quite happy with that start.

“It’s important to get points on the board early and we’ve had a hard start, with Hurlford, Kilwinning and Darvel is our next league game a week on Saturday.

“It is a wee bit frustrating not having a game this weekend, but with a couple of teams pulling out that’s 15 teams in the league so there’s always going to be one extra and it’s our turn this time.

“That’s a bit frustrating when you can build on two good results.”

With teams pulling out of the West Of Scotland League this season there are players available, and Gibson has swooped to bring in defender Barry Ely from Shotts Bon Accord.

The Vics boss says he still wants to replace Ross Caldwell, who moved to Darvel, but other than that he’s happy with his squad.

Gibson said: “We’ve brought in Barry Ely from Shotts, but that’s it just now, we’re quite happy with the squad.

“If anything comes up we might take a look at it, though.

“We lost Ross to Darvel just before the season started so that was a bit of a blow. We’re probably looking for a wee bit of cover for him, and I had somebody in mind, so we’ll keep working on that.”
