Spook-tacular time for community

- MATT BRYAN

The Hillhouse community pulled together to put on a spook-tacular Halloween event that cheered up children and residents.

Locals and volunteers were faced with every obstacle imaginable as they tried to ensure everything was safe and socially distanced while fighting off high winds and rain.

But thanks to an amazing collective effort, the Haunting of Hillhouse went ahead – where the neighbourhood was draped in spooky props and decor, with around 260 children in attendance.

The event was organised by the Link Tenants and Residents’ Association and their secretary Diane Mcquilter was delighted at how successful it was.

She said: “It was great how all the community came together to make it happen.

“There was a load of community people that all made the props as well – and lots of people messaging to say how good it was for their mental health too ,with something to actually look forward to.

“The kids had a ball, they were amazed at the lights and all the different things, they were over the moon.

“We thought the weather might affect the turnout and we had a nightmare setting up. The gazebo blew away and we had to change some of the layout, but all the local volunteers helped out which was amazing.”

Children all turned up in fancy dress and were treated to lots of goodies donated from sweet shops and newsagents, as well as neighbours bringing trick or treat bags. There was also a DJ in attendance playing music from one of the house windows, which everybody enjoyed.

Kids from all over Hamilton came down for the Haunting of Hillhouse, and with strict measures such as social distancing, sanitising stations and markings, the event was a huge success.
