Remembering our war heroes
Wreaths were carefully placed at 60 war memorials across Lanarkshire on Remembrance Sunday (November 8).
With the coronavirus pandemic cancelling all but a few ceremonies across the county, Lanarkshire’s Lord Lieutenant Lady Susan Haughey led the smaller-scale tributes as one or two people gathered to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
Wreaths were laid at war memorials in Hamilton, Blantyre, Bellshill, Motherwell, Ashgill, Dalserf, Bothwell, Larkhall, Lanark, Strathaven, Crossford, Carnwath and Uddingston, among dozens of other locations.
And Lady Haughey said: “Remembrance Sunday is a poignant reminder of all those who left their communities throughout Lanarkshire to serve their country and gave their lives in war and in conflicts throughout the world.
“This year the Lanarkshire Lieutenancy laid 60 wreaths in towns, villages and small hamlets in Lanarkshire to remember their sacrifice.
“I convey my thoughts and prayers to those relatives and friends of the fallen in these communities and offer my sincere condolences at this time.”
Meanwhile, pupils at schools also marked the Armistice this week by creating poppy walls, windows, plaques and crosses to mark the event. St John Ogilvie High also enjoyed a visit from Hamilton veteran Ian Forsyth MBE, who was touched by their striking poppy display in the main foyer of the school.
People across the country also marked the occasion by remembering all those who paid the ultimate sacrifice during a national moment of silence at 11am on Armistice Day (Wednesday).
