Late drama has draw feeling like a defeat

- PAUL THOMSON

Gaffer Gary Doctor admits he was gutted to draw with St Johnstone on Sunday as Hamilton Accies Women conceded a late equaliser just seconds after thinking they’d won the game.

But he insists his charges must now put it to one side to focus on a massive top-of-the-table clash with SWPL 2 leaders Aberdeen this weekend.

Amy Anderson’s looping header late in the first half had Hamilton a goal to the good at half-time, but Saints hauled themselves level on the hour mark.

As the game entered the final five minutes, Megan Quigley’s effort looked to have given Accies all three points but a stunning free kick from Fern Newbigging seconds later forced the visitors to settle for a 2-2 draw.

Doctor said: “It feels a wee bit like a defeat, especially when you are up and down so quickly. It’s tough to drop those points.it was a horrible day, but it was the same for both teams.

“Ultimately, we’ve been in a winning position and we’ve not been able to see it through, which is the hard part.

“I think we were the stronger team across the match and we haven’t taken as many chances as we should be at the moment.

“The players worked ever so hard to get back in front and then it’s just disappointing, giving the free-kick away almost straight from the kick-off.

“It’s a tough one to take, but we are still in good shape so there’s no need to panic. We are playing the team that is flying high now, so hopefully that should focus us.”

Douglas Park on Sunday hoping to close the five-point gap at the top of the table.

Doctor added: “A couple of dropped points here and there from us has allowed them to steamroller ahead.

“It’s a difficult game, but we tend to play well in these matches.

“They are scoring goals, getting in front and killing teams off – which is something we should have done.

“We are not too worried about the gap.

“It’s about us getting points on the board. Getting back to winning ways is the main thing from our point of view.”
