Advertiser readers react to the big-money changes

-

The news about the council’s plans to build a bridge over the loch at Strathclyde Park stirred up a lot of reaction on the Hamilton Advertiser’s Facebook page.

Almost 200 comments were posted on our story – and the majority of them were against the move.

Greig Nightingale said: “Spend it on something worthwile.”

Thomas Ross wrote:“if this is serious then surely this kind of money could be, and should be, better spent within local communities that have been deprived of investment for years and just left to rot and ruin.”

Alfred Cornes posted:“this is unbelievable as they are still cutting services but still expect people to pay their council tax.”

Michael Morrow said:

“Priorities all over the place.! Money would be better spent on things that actually make a difference. Homelessness, roads, re-instating the fortnightly bin collections etc.”

Niamh Langford posted: “Wouldn’t that money or at least some of it be better used helping struggling families that have to rely on food banks, going towards children’s education and hot meals helping the elderly with fuel bills and keeping warm food in their stomachs.what a complete joke.”

Garry Robertson wrote:“they can afford this but no Christmas lights.”

Dez Mccristall said:“where’s all this money coming from? NLC can’t even put the Christmas lights on this year.”

Gina Halkett also felt:“but no Christmas decorations for anyone in Lanarkshire.”

Stephenwelby said:“got to be a wind up?”

Charlene Kate Barclay wrote: “How about you pump that money into our children’s education.”

George Smith said:“waste of time and money.”

Kirsty Anderson wondered: “Where was all this money when they closed Kilbowie? Now it’s just gonna magically appear.”

David Robinson said:“why waste the money, it’s houses we need not another pointless bridge.”

Graeme A Pinkerton had a different idea:“why not some sort of development for anglers? The park was once an international angling venue that surely brought in decent money. Is it not better to bring money in than spend it on useless things like a bridge?”

William Stillie said:“aye just what we need, a bridge over a pond.”

Liam Roy wrote:“and they wonder why we don’t have money to help the people in need.”

Kenny Lind posted:“£50 -£100 million, nothing like a vague estimate and also spending that sort of money on something like that when people are going to food banks to survive is ridiculous.”

Alan Paterson said:“so many comments about‘waste of money...spend it on homeless... spend it on roads’. How about you all wait and see where the funding comes from?the article does suggest third party involvement and lottery funding, after all.”

However, Freya Kennedy said: “Fantastic news, safe bike tracks and somewhere for outdoor swimming/watersports. Prioritising active kids in Lanarkshire is a great step forward.”

Kieran Coia wrote:“looks fantastic, well done.”

And Cara Sloan wrote:“love the idea but we are still in the middle of a pandemic. Don’t think this is how we should be thinking right now. More important things to be spending money on.”
