Engineering work is set to take place outside four South Lanarkshire primary schools in a bid to improve road safety.

St Mark’s Primary in Hamilton, Crawforddyke Primary in Carluke as well as Long Calderwood Primary and St Kenneth’s Primary in East Kilbride will benefit from the works which are due to be completed by

February. Across South Lanarkshire, £1.5 million is being spent this year on projects to improve road safety including the £50,000 allocated for engineering measures at schools.

Following the development of school travel plans, a footway at St Mark’s Primary is set to be extended, while markings will be added to the bus stance at St Kenneth’s Primary.

Long Calderwood Primary is to get a new crossing point with zigzag line markings and a guardrail, while new mini roundabouts will be constructed at Crawforddyke Primary.

The works were detailed to South Lanarkshire Council’s roads safety forum ontuesday, November 17.

In a report to the forum, executive director for community and enterprise Michael Mcglynn said:“measures identified through ongoing School Travel Plan development such as revised crossing points, footway extensions, improved/additional signing, road markings and guardrail are being taken forward.

“The projects have been identified for implementation with others to be progressed as further Schooltravel Plans are completed.

“These works were awarded to an external contractor in October 2020 and at this time a programme of works is awaited.

“It is anticipated that these works will be completed by the end of February 2021.”
