Snow often this occurs

Ten blizzard tales from ten years ago

- MATT BRYAN

When snowmageddon hit Hamilton it was a real concern for expectant mothers, who prayed they wouldn’t go into labour amid the complete pandemonium.

Unfortunately, that is exactly what happened to Lisa Lawson after her waters broke at her Hamilton home.

And with no taxis or emergency services able to get on the roads, an army truck was sent to her rescue.

Lisa recalled: “I was nine months’ pregnant with my daughter Rinoa and everyone messaged me joking not to go into labour that day – and then my waters went.

“No taxis or ambulances on the road so the NHS sent a paramedic and a soldier in an army truck to my house.

“They told me and her dad there was no room for him and I would have to go up myself, and I panicked but the soldier sourced another army truck and her dad was able to be there when she was born.

“It was such a surreal day. I’m so thankful to the army and NHS for getting us to hospital safely. The roads were horrendous and they ended up going up the other side of the dual carriageway to get us there. They took it really slow.

“We got there safe and she was born at 7.05am the next morning.

“My waters went at 4.30pm and the army truck arrived about 11.30pm I think, and we got to the hospital around 1.30am.

“The second truck arrived quickly after. I panicked about Rinoa’s dad Lewis not going to be there, I still don’t know how he pulled it off.

“No one was able to meet Rinoa for a few days after she was born until traffic could start going again.

“It was very surreal. My auntie was stuck on the M8 for 12 hours and Rinoa’s auntie Amy who was at high school at the time had to sleep in the school overnight.

“It was a day no one will forget.”
