Be aware of winter weather

-

Across the South Lanarkshire area we have a great many miles of roadway, including a large section of the M74 plus the many dual carriageways, backroads, streets and side streets which we all use in our daily journeys.

Police Scotland is committed to keeping people safe on these roads. Road safety is a priority for all road users and it is essential that adults keep their own knowledge about road safety up to date.

With the recent winter weather, it is essential that drivers ensure their car is ‘winter ready’. Are your tyres, brakes, windscreens and wiper blades clean and free from defects?

Please ensure your windows are demisted and clear from ice and snow before embarking on your journey and remember to drive according to the conditions, and that stopping distances will be affected by the weather.

Driving in wintery conditions can be challenging and visibility may be significantly reduced. Distractions such as mobile phones or other devices can cause additional stress which endangers yourself, passengers and other road users. Around 4.30am on Wednesday, February 10, police disturbed a male allegedly attempting to force open the air compressor machine at Asda, Larkhall. He was also discovered to allegedly be in possession of a metal bar and screwdriver. A 24-year-old male was arrested and charged.

Around 7pm the same day, police were called to an address in Argyle Drive, Hamilton, after the householder had disturbed a female suspect who had allegedly snuck into his address, apparently with the intention to commit theft. On being disturbed the female ran off, only to allegedly attempt a similar sneak-in theft at another address nearby. Police attended and following enquiries a 41-year-old female was charged.

Throughout the evening of Saturday, February 13, police received several calls regarding a large group of people congregating at the common green area in Hamilton’s Old Town. The group were asked to disperse.

A short time later police were again required to attend the area after several further calls were received in relation to the group allegedly being involved in anti-social behaviour. On police arrival several members of the group allegedly began shouting, swearing and refused to desist. Four persons aged 28, 26 and 17 were arrested and charged with offences including breach of the peace, resist arrest, police assault and obstruction.

You can report matters on 101.
