Charity champ Scott all set for next race

- LEONA GREENAN

Larkhall charity champion Scott Cunningham MBE has set himself a mammoth challenge in the coming months.

For blind runner Scott will run a minimum of 12 marathons in 2021.

The 50-year-old, who has completed seven marathons and 14 half marathons in the last five years, will partake in the challenge in aid of Guide Dogs for the Blind and The Royal Marines Charity.

Scott, whose trusted guide dog Milo sadly passed away in January, told the Advertiser: “Since losing my eyesight in 1993 I have been lucky to have enjoyed an active lifestyle and tackled some fantastic outdoor challenges.

“These have been made possible thanks to three incredible Guide Dogs over the years in Ike, Travis and Milo and also with support from The Royal Marines.

“With this in mind I set myself a challenge for 2021 to run a minimum of 12 marathons over the year.

“This will only be possible due to the incredible support from my friend, David Mooney, who will be my sighted guide for the 11 marathons that we will run virtually, logging the stats on Strava.

“The challenge will then finish when I take part in the Manchester Marathon on October 10, when Royal Marines Warant Officer Billy Rodgers, will be my sighted guide.

“I am extremely thankful to both of these great friends for their help and effort undertaking this with me.

“Every penny kindly donated will go directly to Guide Dogs For The Blind and The Royal Marines Charity, who will be able to deliver their fantastic support to others like they have with me.”

Tammy Robinson, community fundraising relationship manager with Guide Dogs, said: “Scott has been an amazing supporter of Guide Dogs and has raised tens of thousands of pounds for our life-changing services.

“With his latest incredible challenge he is raising money for our Name a Puppy scheme, which will set another puppy on the road to being a life-changing guide dog. And just as significantly, he continues to inspire everyone in the Guide Dogs Scotland community.”
