Be aware of scam messages

- With Constable Benwatson

We continue to receive reports regarding fraudulent text messages which claim to be from delivery companies.

These messages explain that the victim has missed a delivery of a package, and go on to request that victims follow a link and pay a small fee for the package to be re-delivered. Clicking the link triggers a second scam message from what may look like your bank. Victims are then contacted via telephone by someone claiming to be from their bank and explaining that their bank account has been hacked or is at risk. The victim is instructed to act quickly and provide personal and banking details, claiming that a new, “safe” bank account is needed.

One South Lanarkshire resident recently followed the link and was subsequently defrauded of more than £5000.

This scam preys upon your sense of urgency. Do not click on the links. Instead, take a moment to stop and think. Make contact with your bank on a trusted number – many scammers can create a spoof number which may look genuine. Please remain vigilant.
