Man to wed woman he was jailed for assaulting

He caused her to crash car and injured her in attack

- COURT REPORTER

A businessman jailed for two years on domestic abuse charges still plans to wed the partner he assaulted.

Duncan Mccallum grabbed the steering wheel while Blantyre woman Keri-anne Taylor was driving, causing the car to crash into a parked vehicle.

Mccallum, 45, who runs a garden maintenance firm, was found guilty of culpable and reckless conduct.

A jury at Hamilton Sheriff Court also convicted him of assaulting Ms Taylor and of threatening or abusive behaviour towards her and a police officer.

The car crash happened in Shettleston Road, Glasgow, on New Year’s Day, 2019.

Although no one was injured, both vehicles were badly damaged. Sheriff Andrew Mcintyre told Mccallum, of Shettleston Road: “I am concerned at the risk you posed to the complainer and others that day.”

The court heard that Mccallum assaulted Ms Taylor in Blantyre’s Logan Street and Auchinraith Road on June 15, 2019.

He grabbed her repeatedly by the hair and pulled her to the ground, causing injury.

Mccallum was cleared of two further assaults to severe injury on his partner at her home in Logan Street.

It had been alleged that he headbutted her and then, on another occasion, shoved her to the floor.

Despite the troubled background, the couple are engaged to be married and Ms Taylor works for Mccallum’s company. Defence agent

Christopher Munro told the court: “Their wedding was postponed because of his bail conditions, but they intend to get married relatively soon if they can.

“There have been no difficulties since 2019.” Passing sentence, Sheriff Mcintyre told Mccallum: “These are very serious matters and you have six previous convictions for domestic abuse.

“It’s true that there was a gap in your offending between 2011 and 2019.

“But I’m in no doubt that the only option is prison in view of the nature of the charges and your long history of domestic abuse.”
