Blantyre Community Committee are delighted to announce they will be back bigger and better than ever before in 2022.

With the global pandemic cancelling all of their scheduled events in the last 21 months, members are now planning for their popular summer gala, 80s night and 2022 Christmas lights switch-on and festive market and much more.

In the past the committee have laid on some wellattended community gigs, with thousands of people attending their public markets, gala days and funfairs.

However, with coronavirus still looming they made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s Christmas lights switch-on in the interest of public safety and leave it in the hands of South Lanarkshire Council, who quietly and remotely turned on the lights on Glasgow Road and Main Street on Sunday, November 20.

Blantyre businessman Paul Veverka, treasurer of the committee, said: “Blantyre Community Committee will be back in 2022 with a planned summer gala, 80s night and 2022 Christmas switch-on with full intention to be bigger and better than ever before, sticking to coronavirus guidelines of course.

“We were deeply saddened at having to cancel our 2020 schedule and then to find us still in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic this year as well.

“And with our events attracting thousands of people, coupled with a rise in infections and other contributing factors, it was far safer for the people of Blantyre and beyond if we held off on this year’s festivities, a decision we can justify with other competent organisers across Lanarkshire cancelling big events like fireworks night and Christmas markets elsewhere.

“However, with that being said we cannot wait to get back out there in 2022 and look forward to welcoming you all in due course to what is sure to be a summer of fun.”
