Host club Law battle the elements at Short Course Championships

-

Law and District Amateur Athletics Club runners put themselves to the test as the club co-hosted the National Short Course Championships earlier this month.

While the strong contingent who took part placed outside of the podium places, there was still a whole host of impressive displays from under-15 to senior athletes.

Despite a few wedding, injury and sickness call offs Law had an impressive 29 athletes taking part at the popular events, which was returning to Lanark Race course.

The club once again helped cohost the event with Scottish Athletics, while Bobby Hill’s hard work ensured the event ran smoothly.

It was an early start for the volunteers who started setting up the course from 8am ahead of the first race at noon.

Whilst this wasn’t the first cross country race of the season it was certainly the return of cross country weather with challenging conditions for officials and athletes.

Sadly, James Gillon was unable to travel back from London due to illness but Law did have a returning exile in Ross Penny, who travelled back from Wakefield to enjoy some proper cross country conditions in a Law vest.

U15 athlete Jessica Inglis was Law’s highest placed athlete on the day with an impressive sixth place finish at her age group in a time of 6:58 for the 2km route, with seconds separating her from fourth spot.

Alayna Mccann had another great run with a time of 7:43. Fellow middle distance training partners Ryan Kellock and Daniel Simpson had great runs for 6:29 and 7:14, respectively.

The U17’s had a 3km route and Fiona Currie was first home for Law in 12:39, then Yuki Faulds in 13:15, followed by Ayumi Faulds 13:52 and Amanda Quinn 14:20.

Law also had four under 17 boys running with Oscar Logan in 19th with a time of 10:31 followed by Logan Whitton (11:15), Craig Cherrie (11:23) and Euan Anderson making his debut with 12:28.

This year has seen a jump in our senior women numbers with seven women taking part – although Jess Inglis was running for her University team.

Emily Mcnicol was first home for the 4km route in 15:04 followed by Maddy Watson, Jess Robson Reagan Binnie, Lesley Graham, Jen Beattie and Margaret Newell.

Last to run was the senior men with Kieran Pugh leading the way in 13:38, followed by V40 Darran Muir in 14:02, Ross Hill, Ross Penny, James Mcclafferty, Rich Beattie, Matthew Gillon, Jim Gillon, Derek Taylor, Ben Fountain and Conor Butters.

After a good day out, preparation are now well underway for the West Cross Country in Balloch early next month.
