Make your home safe

- With Constable Stewartmclean

As we approach the summer, and lighter nights which accompany these months, Police Scotland would like to remind you that securing your home and valuables is important.

In order to do so we recommend carrying out the following steps.

Keep windows and doors locked – always remove the key from the lock where there is glazing nearby.

Secure sheds and garages with good quality locks.

Check any outside security lighting is working.

Don’t leave tools/items lying around that could be used by a thief to gain entry through a window or door.

Record and security mark valuable property.

Don’t advertise an empty property on social media.

Secure your vehicle and remove valuables from within.

Another handy tool which could assist in preventing such crimes is to sign up to Neighbourhood Watch Scotland Alert System. By doing so you’ll receive free alerts about local crime prevention and safety issues from partners such as Police Scotland and Trading Standards regarding the area in which you live.

Neighbourhood Watch Scotland is a community-led initiative to bring local people together to address crime and other community safety issues. Neighbourhood Watch groups often liaise with the local police, local authority and other agencies. The concept originated in the United States and was introduced into the UK in the 1980s.

Behind it lies a very simple idea: working together can help to improve your community. Neighbourhood Watches can be large, covering most of the households on an estate, or may involve just a few houses. They may meet frequently, or keep in touch via email or social media. There really is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to Neighbourhood Watch. Neighbourhood Watch adapts to fit the community it serves. Quite simply it’s “Your Watch, Your Way”.
