Accies safety does not satisfy Lawson

- Ben Banks at Cappielow

MORTON ................................................ 0 HAMILTON ACCIES .............................. 1 Steve Lawson is happy that Hamilton are safe in the Championship – but it’s not something to fully celebrate with promotion out of reach.

The midfielder turned in a tireless performance as David Moyo’s sixth minute goal sealed a 1-0 win for Stuart Taylor’s side at Morton.

They sit sixth ahead of their final home game with Raith Rovers on Saturday, before finishing the league season off against Inverness on April 30.

While a promotion push via the play-offs was ended last weekend when Arbroath prevailed 1-0 victors at New Douglas Park, Accies achieved league security with maximum points in Greenock.

Lawson was happy for the performance, but attentions are already beginning to turn to next season’s promotion fight.

Hamilton were relegated from the Premiership last year, and their combative battler insists that is where the club should be, although they’ll have to earn their right.

The 27-year-old said: “It was a fight but in the end we have three points. We may be safe but we still want to finish strong and win the last two games.

“Hamilton are not a Championship team, we have to be in the Premiership. It’s a relief to be safe but it’s also disappointing as we can’t make the play-offs this season.

“Next season, we hopefully will. We are going to work hard towards that. We can play on the deck, we can play long ball.

“We’ve won 4-0 at Partick Thistle, we won 1-0 at Morton.

“We can play lots of different types of football.”

Lawson arrived at New Douglas Park in January following a lay-off without club after an exit from Livingston last year. It was a difficult period for the versatile midfielder, who is now hopeful of getting an entire season under his belt next term.

He added: “It has been tough but thanks to Hamilton I am playing again. I’ve got a few months in my legs now and I am feeling good.

“Hopefully next season I can get that full season. My fitness is coming back slowly! I can’t say I am back 100 per cent yet.

“When I first came here, I was unfit. But thanks to the staff here, I’ve been able to keep building my fitness levels up.”
