Three cheers as pub raise cash for hospice

- MATT BRYAN

A Hamilton pub has thanked its kind-hearted punters for helping to raise over £1200 for St Andrew’s Hospice.

Mavrix Bar launched their charity drive during the Cheltenham Festival, which saw locals racing in the door to buy raffle tickets for a host of fantastic prizes.

The week was a huge success with £606 being raised, which was then matched, as promised by the boozer’s landlord John Mulvaney, bringing the total to a whopping £1212.

He says not only was it great to help out a local cause, but the buzz and community feel brought back to the bar was very important as a lot of fun was had after a tough two years for everyone.

Hamilton firms SALT Hamilton, Fat Yankees, Beau Ultime-skin Aesthetics, as well as Marks & Spencer’s all donated vouchers to the value of £40 for raffles which were drawn daily during the charity week.

And then the big draw took place on the Friday following the Gold Cup race where tickets for Rangers v

Celtic on April 3, as well as another two tickets for the same fixture, were won.

Nadine Pender from St Andrew’s Hospice came out to greet the pub’s staff who handed over the cheque for £1212.

Speaking on the week’s success, John told the Advertiser “It was fantastic, it was a great week and everyone enjoyed it.

“We had daily raffles and everyone was delighted with that, then on the Friday we had the big draw for the Celtic and Rangers tickets and it was a regular who won that which was great to see.

“It was all good fun, everyone was well fed all week with free food on all week.

“I was really taken aback by how well it was received.

“Absolutely fantastic to see the money raised. I think everybody’s got a story that can relate to St Andrew’s Hospice whether it be a family member or friend, everyone can relate to that.

“The charity were really happy with our target which was £500 at first so when we updated them to say we were going to beat that they were delighted.”

Mavrix Bar also enjoyed an increase in footfall to the pub as regulars and new customers got involved in the charity week.

John says it meant a lot to see smiles on faces again as the pub looks to brighter times ahead.

He added: “It was quite emotional to see people smiling and having fun.

“The last two years have been exceptionally difficult, so to see that was quite heart-warming.

“There was a great atmosphere and a good fun week for everyone.”
