Larkhall Harriers club secretary and level three coach, Willie Mowbray, has been announced as one of the finalists for the Youthlink Scotland, Volunteer Youth Worker Award.
Willie has dedicated most of his adult life to Larkhall YMCA and the Harriers, coaching generations of Larkhall’s young people, giving them the opportunity to learn and excel themselves through athletics.
Since 1981, Willie has been the backbone of Larkhall YMCA Harriers, dedicating over 42 years to shaping the lives of young people in his community. Willie’s impact extends far beyond the athletics track.
His work in organising trips, coaching, and celebrating young people’s achievements have gained international recognition, reflecting the positive impact he has had on countless lives.
Chloe Gilfillan, one of the young athletes mentored by Willie, said: “Willie is the most dedicated coach I have ever met.
“My journey through running has been filled with many ups and downs, but no matter what I was going through, Willie stayed by my side.
“He doesn’t care what stage of fitness you are at, as long as you are trying your best, he will go to all lengths to support you. Throughout the years I have been coached by him, I have watched the transformational effect he has had on the lives of many young athletes, inspiring them and teaching them to not only become experts in the sport, but also confident young individuals who will strive in their future destinations.
“I hope this nomination sheds a light on the tremendous amount of hours he has dedicated to the sport that so many of us hold close to our hearts.”
Willie will find out if he is a winner when the awards are held on Wednesday, June 12.
