Parents who had newborn babies in Lanarkshire last year went gaga for the names Luca and Olivia for their children.
Luca was Scotland’s top name for baby boys for the first time in 2023, according to new figures released by National Records of Scotland (NRS).
And in Lanarkshire a total of 70 boys were named Luca – 42 in South Lanarkshire and 28 in North Lanarkshire.
Olivia was the most popular name chosen for 49 girls – 28 in North Lanarkshire (tying with Aria) and 21 in South Lanarkshire.
However, the most popular girls’ name in South Lanarkshire was Emily, chosen 30 times for newborns.
The next most popular boys’ names were Lewis and Jude in North Lanarkshire, with 21 each. And in South Lanarkshire, 25 boys were named H a r r i s , while the names Noah and Jack accounted for 23 apiece.
The next most popular girls’ names were Ella (19), Amelia and Sofia (both 18) in North Lanarkshire, and Freya and Millie (both 24), and Olivia (21) in South Lanarkshire.
It could be argued that Sophia/sofia is the most popular girls’ name as it accounted for 62 of the total number in Lanarkshire, with 35 children in North Lanarkshire named in one of the two spelling variants.
Luca overtook Noah as the most popular name for boys in Lanarkshire, from the previous year. And Olivia moved up two places displacing Millie, with Grace which was in second place in 2022 dropping out of the top five.
The rise in the popularity of the name Luca, which is a derivative of the Latin name Lucas meaning “light giver”, coincides with the Disney Pixar film of the same name. Luca Bish from Brighton was also a contender on ITV’S Love Island.
Famous women named Olivia include Hollywood actresses Olivia Wilde and Olivia Newton John, and Grammy award winner Olivia Rodrigo. Famous Emilys include Youtube star Emily Dobson.
In 2022 the most popular boys’ names in North Lanarkshire were Noah and Theo, and Jack and Noah respectively in South Lanarkshire.
