Law AAC youngsters in fine form

Youngsters from Law and District Amateur Athletics Club have impressed at cross country events recently, producing some fine performanc­es.

Congratula­tions were in order for all those who took part in the North Lanarkshir­e Schools Primary Cross Country last month.

In the P5 girls’ race, Anais Grant had a great run to win the silver medal, with Olivia Hunter in 7th and Hayley Swan in 16th.

Next up was the P6 girls, with Abbie Boyle taking the gold medal and Helena Wotherspoo­n bronze, closely followed by Paige O’neill in 6th.

Nieve Fitzpatric­k was Law’s only athlete in the P7 girls’ race and had a great run. In the P7 race Alexander Wotherspoo­n took the gold with a strong kick in the last 100m.

Meanwhile, athletes excelled at the Clydesdale Schools Primary Cross Country races at Lanark Race Course, in the wind and rain.

In the P6 girls’ race, the champion was Allyssa Bennet who won the gold with Layla Kirk and Maya Carmichael in fourth, followed by Skye Lambie, Caitlin Mccaffrey, Isla Dickson and Emily Harvie.

In the P6 boys’ race there were good runs from Christophe­r Traynor, Mikey Laird, James Bennet and Maxx Steele.

In the P7 girls’ race Chloe Gardiner finished a fabulous fifth and the other girls Jessie Obinna, Charlotte Phillip and Sophie Lammie all ran well too.

The P7 boys all had great runs from Ben Wilson, Jackson Masters, Daniel Kennedy, Archie Watson and Duke Mcbain.

Elsewhere, U13 Alexander Wotherspoo­n continued his great form at the Young

Athlete Road Races in Greenock, winning the championsh­ip title coming in 13 seconds in front of the runner-up.

The U13 boys went on to win team bronze, so congratula­tions go to Alexander, Tyler Turnbull (23rd), and Declan Hare (26th).

Other results on the day were U13 Alfie Brown 42nd, U15s Erin Mcgurk 47th, Lucy Corns 55th, Orla Turnbull 60th and Cameron Chambers 20th in the boys’ road race. U17 Jessica Inglis finished fifth and Ryan Kellock 36th.

Whilst the young athletes were competing in Greenock, some of Law’s seniors were taking part in race one of the club road championsh­ip event at Alloa Half Marathon.

Running conditions were perfect with Grant Mackenzie first home for club in 98th place. Lesley Graham was 292nd with a new personal best. Next up was Martin Kay also with a personal best, followed by Rich Beattie and Mark Milligan, together with John O’leary not far behind, John and Mark both picked up personal bests.

Finally, the club’s youngest athletes were competing at the Emirates Arena in the U12s’ Fun Day, being among some of the first athletes to experience the newly laid track which was recently replaced for the World Indoor Athletic Championsh­ips.

Each youngster competed in the 60 hurdles, 200m, long jump and shot put and there were some fantastic performanc­es all round.

Competing were Abigail Gardner, Allyssa Bennet, James Bennet, Helena Wotherspoo­n, Abbie Boyle, Layla Kirk, Ellie Mcgowan, Chloe Gardiner, Emily Harvie, Isla Dickson, James Connor, Luke Connor, Logan Muir, Neve Shepka and Christophe­r Traynor.
