Slip­stream­ers fly the flag at school games

FOUR young cy­clists flew the flag for Hilling­don Slip­stream­ers at the Sains­bury’s School Games in Manch­ester.

Lorna Bowler, Har­riet Mel­lor, Carl Jolly and Charles Page made the jour­ney up the M6 for the big event at the Na­tional Cy­cling Cen­tre last week.

The Hilling­don quar­tet rep­re­sented one half of the en­tire Eng­land Cen­tral team at this year’s Games.

Mel­lor and Bowler started the week­end’s ac­tion in the Girls Sprint, Bowler fin­ish­ing sev­enth and Mel­lor 24th. Both took part in the Girls Keirin, cy­cling in dif­fer­ent fi­nals with Bowler fin­ish­ing 12th and Mel­lor 19th.

Jolly cy­cled in the Boys Keirin fin­ish­ing 24th, while Page fin­ished 20th in the Boys Pur­suit. Page also took part in the boys 20km Sprint with team-mate An­thony An­der­son, fin­ish­ing in ninth.

On the fi­nal day, Mel­lor and Bowler joined forces to take part in the Girls Two-Lap Team Sprint where they fin­ished 14th, while their-four girl team pur­suit ef­forts yielded an eighth-place fin­ish.

Both Jolly and Page cy­cled in the boys team pur­suit in the 3,000m and fin­ished inside the top 10.

Mean­while, Bowler man­aged a sec­ond-place re­sult at the Bri­tish Cy­cling Na­tional Youth Cir­cuit Se­ries in Scar­bor­ough.

Mil­lie Cole­man fin­ished first in one race and ended up eighth in the fi­nal stand­ings of the U8s, while Jed Smith­son came sixth in the U10s and fin­ished fifth in the over­all stand­ings.
