Animal Rescue with Marion Garnett

Dedicated animal expert Marion Garnett, founder of the Ealing Animal Welfare Bazaar, continues her column

THE Mayhew Animal Home is celebrating. They’ve just won the title Animal Charity Team of the Year in the 2016 Petplan and Association of Dogs and Cats Homes Animal Charity Awards.

They competed against 6000 others and won – it’s a tremendous recognition of their work in this country and abroad.

But that’s not all, they are also celebrating their 130th birthday and, as part of their celebrations, last week they opened an extension to their veterinary facilities.

Opened by Louis Theroux, their new facilities include two new operating theatres, which will give them increased capacity for free and low cost neutering, community animal welfare programmes and training.

We are all invited to have a behind the scenes tour of these facilities at The Mayhew’s Open Day on Sunday May 22 (11am to 4pm).

There will be stalls, games and live music. There is also a cake competition whereby competitors bring a cake decorated with a Mayhew theme. Judging will be at 1pm with the prize being afternoon tea for two at Lancaster London.

More details from 020 8206 5872.

But not everyone at The Mayhew is celebrating. Rama has put his celebrations on hold until he gets his new home.

Rama was brought to The Mayhew as a stray and, since then, has been enjoying himself in foster care, but because his foster carer was going away, he is now back at The Mayhew and he’s not happy.

His foster carer describes him as funny and entertaining and as a cat who, after not making a sound for months when he first arrived, now never stops ‘talking’.

His foster carer says that when she is playing with him by throwing crunchies for him, she can direct him to missed crunchies by saying ‘yes’, ‘no’ and ‘good boy’ when he’s close to them - just like the hot and cold game.

Rama has been diagnosed as having asthma, for which he takes a tablet hidden in treats. After adoption, The Mayhew will be willing to continue to see Rama, for his asthma, in their clinic.

Rama would like to join the celebrations so if you are able to give him a loving home, go and tell him at The Mayhew, Trenmar Gardens, Kensal Green or see details at themayhew.org.
