Animal Rescue with Marion Garnett

Dedicated animal expert Marion Garnett, founder of the Ealing Animal Welfare Bazaar, continues her column

Harefield Gazette - - ANIMAL NEWS -

NEO’S first port of call in the morning is his foster carer’s lap where he sits while she eats her porridge. Meanwhile, his sister Holly mooches round the room saying ‘thanks for the offer, but I don’t need anybody’s lap’.

At the moment, Hounslow Animal Welfare Society (HAWS) have lots of kittens to choose from - big ones, small ones, bold ones, shy ones – but six-month-old Neo and Holly are for the cat connoisseur. Living in a shed until they were about six weeks old, they had little human contact until they came into foster care. Consequently, Holly is nervous of humans – Holly is the shy one and Neo is the bold one.

Neo loves his foster carer to make a fuss of him and stroke him, whereas Holly is timid and difficult to touch.

I had two cats like that once. The sister (who we still have) is the friendliest cat in the world, whereas her brother, who has died now, was a real scaredy cat – he was even scared of himself.

But we adored him and the times when he did come to be stroked were special because you realised what you had achieved in your relationship with him.

So, if you want a kitten that is totally gorgeous but is likely to be less complicated, have a look at the HAWS website (haws-animals.org.uk) and choose one of the many stunning ones there waiting for a home. But, if you are prepared for the challenge and rewards of homing a nervous cat, consider brave Neo and his shy sister, Holly.

HAWS want to home them together so that Holly can continue to benefit from Neo’s confidence. You can contact HAWS on 020 8560 5443.

But before you get a kitten of any sort, make sure you are prepared for the commitment involved.

Cats can live over 20 years and they deserve to live in a happy home for the whole of their life and not be passed round unnecessarily as circumstances change.

Now, as promised, here are details of the Dogs Trust Fun Day. This major event takes place on Sunday June 5 (10.30am-4pm) at Highway Farm, Harvil Rd, Harefield UB9 6JW. Attractions include gifts, crafts, children’s area and all day fun dog show.
