Roof blaze at block

A TO­TAL of 40 peo­ple fled a burn­ing block of flats in West Dray­ton af­ter the roof of the build­ing caught fire.

Four fire en­gines, 21 fire­fight­ers and po­lice of­fi­cers were called to a roof fire, on St Stephens Road in Yiewsley, West Dray­ton, on Tues­day May 24.

The bri­gade were called at 7.55pm to find that part of the roof of a four storey block, con­tain­ing shops on Yiewsley High Street as well as the flats, were dam­aged by the blaze.

Around 10 peo­ple had fled the prop­erty be­fore the ar­rival of the fire bri­gade, and a fur­ther 30 residents were evac­u­ated from the third and fourth floors, by fire crews wear­ing breath­ing ap­pa­ra­tus.

Fire­fight­ers had the blaze un­der con­trol in one hour, at 8.55pm.

Fire crews from Hilling­don, Heathrow and Hen­don fire sta­tions at­tended the scene.

The cause of the fire is un­der in­ves­ti­ga­tion.
