Fare freeze will not apply to all

Only single and pay-as-you-go tickets

LONDONERS reacted with disappointment and anger after Sadiq Khan’s announcement that fare freezes only applied to single ticket and Pay As You Go users.

Four out of the six types of tickets will therefore rise in price, meaning those with daily, weekly or monthly travel passes will still see their fares increase in line with inflation.

This is despite Khan claiming Londoners “wouldn’t pay a penny more in 2020” during his election campaign.

Will not apply to travelcards. Not what he said in campaign.”

On the news that the promised fares freeze will not apply to weekly and monthly travelcards, Conservative group leader Gareth Bacon said: “Just four weeks after the election the Mayor’s flagship policy has been thrown out of the window.

“By raising Travelcard prices by inflation and breaking his biggest promise he is turning his back on those who showed faith in him.

“Hundreds of thousands of commuting Londoners use Travelcards, and thus will never see this freeze.”

He added: “Sadiq Khan was asked about his fares freeze thousands of times during the Mayoral campaign.

“Not once did he mention that this freeze would not include Travelcards.”

A spokesperson for the Mayoral Office said: “Every month at least seven million customers will benefit all the time as they do not reach ‘caps’ on pay as you go fares or do not use

“Each month a further four million customers will benefit from the freeze whenever they use TfL services for part of their journeys.”
